View: India’s urbanisation challenges and the way forward

The political economy of development in India has always leaned rural. It was not until 2005 when the JNNURM was launched to reform cities through planned development. JNNURM has now been replaced by AMRUT. Since 2014, there has been a marked shift in policy focus, reflecting a greater acknowledgement of the importance of urban development.
